The 2006 America Recycles Day Eco-Shopping Extravaganza pitted metro-area elected officials, local media representatives and schoolchildren in a competition to see who was the most eco-savvy when it comes to grocery shopping.

The teams, dubbed the Boulder Glass Gladiators, Broomfield Aluminum Avengers, Denver Paper Pirates and Golden Plastic Police, wore team t-shirts that were hand-painted by third-grade students at Columbine Elementary in Boulder. They selected products based on three eco-shopping principles: waste prevention, recyclability and recycled content (made from recycled materials).
