Development Director

 

SUMMARY:

We Don’t Waste is the premier food recovery nonprofit in the Denver Metro Area whose mission is to support the community and the environment by reclaiming and redistributing quality food to those in need.

The Development Director’s role is to develop, direct, and manage the strategy and implementation of all fundraising activities for We Don’t Waste. The position is responsible for generating the organization’s annual revenue goals through individual donor engagement, foundation and corporate support, and strong public relations. They will oversee development and marketing-related staff and high-level volunteers, and work closely with the Executive Director, who works as a key part of the development team. The Development Director is someone with splendid follow-up, graceful persistence, and focused work ethic. The ideal candidate possesses strong and clear writing skills and exceptional relationship and management aptitude. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all development efforts of We Don’t Waste
  • Develop annual fundraising plan including SMART goals, clear objectives, and tactical plans with timelines, processes, and tasks
  • Prepare and manage the fundraising income and expense including monthly reporting, quarterly projections and year-end planning
  • Supervise development-related staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers
  • Assist Chair of We Don’t Waste Development Committee
  • Oversee grants pipeline including calendar, research, application, and reporting
  • Cultivate individual gifts and manage the stewardship of key donors through a systematic process of prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship
  • Oversee research of prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors
  • Develop fundraising cultivation and stewardship strategies for events
  • Oversee development of marketing and fundraising materials
  • Ensure proper database management of Salesforce, including confidentiality, accuracy, and timely updates and entry of donor records.
  • Ensure timely and accurate acknowledgement of donor gifts, concerns and requests
  • Conduct We Don’t Waste tours and lead site visits with foundation program officers, individual donors, and other prospects
  • Work with program staff to track evaluation and outcomes for use in grants and other fundraising activities
  • Assist the Executive Director in creating and implementing a culture of fundraising throughout the organization

REQUIRED JOB SKILLS, EXPERIENCES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven aptitude in the field of fundraising and development (work and/or education experience)
  • Knowledge and experience in individual donor cultivation, corporate solicitations, fundraising strategy development, and grant research and writing
  • Strong management ability, including ability to manage up
  • Highly coachable ­ can take feedback and run with it
  • Strong written, verbal, and public speaking communication skills
  • Highly organized and able to create and oversee organizational systems
  • Self-starter and persistent with flexible and willing attitude
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability
  • Perform other related duties as required.

PREFERRED JOB SKILLS, EXPERIENCES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven track record fundraising for budgets over $500,000
  • Knowledge of and passion for food systems, food access, food recovery and sustainability
  • Previous experience with use of Salesforce or equivalent CRM database
  • Digital design and/or Web experience, including Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress
  • Website development, social media, or other ability to create compelling visual and web identity
  • Experience managing fundraising campaigns
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 3-5 years’ minimum experience in professional fundraising
